Mrs. Elizabeth Harwood
Welcome to the KMMS band homepage!

Kasson-Mantorville Middle School has five concert bands in grades 5-8 that meet during the school day.  Rock 'n' Jazz band and instrumental ensembles meet before school.  Studying music and learning how to play an instrument will be one of the most valuable aspects of your child's education.  Through band, students develop discipline, critical thinking skills and cooperation with others.

My fifteen years as band director in this district have convinced me that any child can succeed in band with a reasonable amount of effort. Unlike many school band programs in other districts, there is not a music-screening test for students interested in band.  As long as they meet the attendance, performance and practice expectations, your child will have a place in our bands.  Each student receives a weekly small group lesson and regular band rehearsals.  Both the lessons and rehearsals take place during the school day for all band students.

Educational background:
I graduated from Madison High School in Madison, South Dakota. I am a 2001 graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education with an instrumental emphasis. My major instrument is oboe, and I played with top performance ensembles (band, orchestra, woodwind quintet) and went on two European tours with those ensembles.  I found a master's degree program that fit my educational philosophy, and in 2007 I completed a master's degree in Education: Curriculum and Instruction with an Interdisciplinary Focus through the University of Minnesota - Rochester Campus.

Teaching experience:
Grades 5, 6, and 8 bands: September 2010-present at KMMS
Grade 7 band: 2001-09 at KMMS/HS, then 2010-present at KMMS.
Grade 9 band: 2009-10 at KMHS
Grade 10-12 bands: 2001-10 at KMHS.
Music Lessons Studio 1998-2010.
